Where is the Foundation filmed? – The cinema addict

‘Foundation’ is a science fiction series on Apple TV + based on Isaac Asimov’s book series of the same name. The show, directed by David S. Goyer, follows a vast millennial saga of the struggle between “The Foundation”, a group of exiles, and the Galactic Empire. Set across a multitude of worlds across the galaxy, the tale takes place amidst a breathtaking landscape. Building these worlds and bringing them to life is a daunting task, with the production of the series being one of the largest of its kind in recent history. Wondering where “Foundation” is filmed? We have the story!
Foundation film locations
The show follows an extensive filming schedule that takes the production team to several countries. The on-location shooting is done in some truly spectacular locations that represent alien worlds, while the studio shooting is also used for a lot of the production. The show is filmed across Malta, the Canary Islands, Germany, Ireland and Iceland, and principal photography apparently began on November 11, 2019.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, production was suspended on March 12, 2021, and then resumed on October 6. The long production cycle, which lasted over 18 months, finally ended in April 2021. Now let’s take a look at the specific filming locations used to bring the show to life.
Kalkara, Malta
Malta was initially supposed to play a minor role in production, but after further restrictions were placed on London (likely due to the pandemic) filming in the archipelago nation was significantly increased.
The cast and crew received special permission from the government, and filming began in early 2021. The country apparently represents an alien aquatic world, and production makes heavy use of Malta’s film studios. The facility has an indoor water tank and two huge outdoor water tanks, which are among the largest in the world and used for filming. The studios are located on St. Rocco Street in the village of Kalkara in the south-east of Malta.
Other places in Malta
Fort Manoel, located on Manoel Island in the town of Gżira in central Malta, is also intended for on-site filming. The production also uses a few other sites around Malta for the lens.
Dublin, Ireland
The Trinity Long Room Hub Arts and Humanities Research Institute, part of Trinity College Dublin and located in College Green, is used for on-site filming. The impressive building has a decidedly futuristic look and is a fitting backdrop for the sci-fi series.
Other places in Ireland
The show is filmed extensively in Ireland and uses the National Technology Park, which covers an area of 385 acres and is located in the suburb of Castletroy about 3 miles from the city of Limerick. Troy Studios, located on Plassey Park Road in the vast Business and Technology Park, is also used. The facility offers 100,000 square feet of stage space and contains the largest sound stages in the country.
Canary Islands, Spain
‘Foundation’ also uses spectacular locations in the Spanish Canary Islands. This includes filming in the municipality of Tuineje, located in the southern part of the island of Fuerteventura in the province of Las Palmas. Surreal volcanic landscapes are also filmed on the island at Caldera Los Arrabales and in the farms called Granja de Pozo Negro.
Filming also takes place on the island of Tenerife, in the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Commonly known as Santa Cruz, it is one of the two capitals of the Canary Islands, the other being Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The production also uses the famous luxury hotel Iberostar Heritage Grand Mencey, located at Drive Jose Naveiras, 38.
Reykjavik, Iceland
With plenty of alien landscapes scattered throughout the series, it’s no surprise that filming is also set in Iceland. Known for its spectacular and ethereal landscapes, the country has hosted many popular shows such as “Game of Thrones” and “Black Mirror”. Filming for ‘Foundation’ takes place near the capital Reykjavik, and a crew of around 250 was used for the filming of Season 1.
Berlin, germany
Filming also takes place on location in Berlin, Germany. The scenes shot here apparently use some of the city’s impressive architecture to film interior and exterior scenes.
